Bandung which is famous as “PARIS VAN JAVA” or Paris located in Java island is the capital of Province West Java, Indonesia. That name of Bandung city which is also known as the City of Flowers is not a nonsense. Its location which is 791 m above sea surface has made Bandung as the cool-climate city and comfortable to be lived. The highest point of Bandung is in the north with 1050 m height above sea surface and the lowest point is in the south with 675m above sea surface height. The topology of northern Bandung area is relatively higher and more hilly compared to the southern Bandung which is flatter. Another uniqueness of this city is its location which is surrounded by mountains that cause Bandung seems like a basin. This can’t be apart from Bandung’s history which was a lake.
One of the most famous mountains in Bandung is mountain Tangkuban Parahu which is in the northern Bandung. The mountain, which is closely related with the Sangkuriang myth and have the shape of an upside down-ship, soars strongly as if it watches the people of Bandung do their daily work. The location of Bandung, 107o East Longitude and 6o 55’ South Latitude and exactly in the centre of province West Java, make Bandung easily being accessed from many places, including the capital Jakarta. The city which has 167,45 km2 width is streamed by 2 main rivers, they are River Citarum and River Cikapundung.
Geologically, Bandung was made in the Kwarter Period and covered by alluvial soil resulted from the explosion of Mountain Tangkuban Parahu. The type of material in nothern, western, and the centre of Bandung is adonsol, while in the southern and eastern consist of the spread of gray alluvial type with clayey sediment material.
There are two famous landmarks in Bandung, they are Gedung Sate and Bridge Pasupati. Gedung Sate is one of inheritance buildings of Netherland colonial period. This building, which has a unique architecture in the form of a pillar on the roof that is like sate, now becomes the center of West Java government. Meanwhile, Bridge Pasupati is a bridge built on River Cikapundung and it has 2,8 km length and 30-60 m width. The bridge that was published officially on June 25 2005 is the shortcut access that connects eastern and northern Bandung.
For transportation facilities, Bandung has an international airport called Husein Sastra Negara that connects Bandung and some cities in Indonesia, and also some cities abroad, such as Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Singapore. While for train service, Bandung is supported by 2 big railway stations, they are Stasiun Bandung -which also known as Stasiun Hall- for service in executive and business class, and Stasiun Kiaracondong for economical service, and also 5 small railway stations, they are Cimindi, Andir, Ciroyom, Cikudapateuh, and Gedebage. The transportation in Bandung is also strengthen by 2 intercity bus terminals, they are Terminal Cicaheum for access to the east area of Bandung and Terminal Leuwi Panjang for access to the west area of Bandung. Beside that, there are also some in-city bus terminals and terminals for small vehicle called “angkot”.
The access from Bandung to Jakarta can be passed through Tol Cikampek and then continued through Tol Cipularang. From the east, the toll can be reached through Tol Padaleunyi from Cileunyi district. If you don’t want to pass through toll, Bandung can also be reached from Jakarta through Puncak which has the beautiful scenery of mountains and tea garden.
